Oh my land, here is a rest-assured way to have a heartwarming afternoon: reveal a nursery design to first-time, soon-to-be parents! I’m still overwhelmed by the warm and fuzzies of it all. I can’t wait to meet the little guy and see him in this space. He’s going to love the nursery, and if he’s anything like his dad, especially the dinosaurs. :)
I partnered with these soon-to-be-parents on our design package “In-Home Consult + Design Board.” It provides a plan for the room’s design and layout, but gives the parents the opportunity to be hands on in putting together the nursery. I included a handful of DIY projects that will allow the soon-to-be-parents (and their eager friends and family) to create a space that is wonderfully personal. There’s something of a right-of-passage to figuring out how to put together a crib. And this couple wanted that full experience, but a little help with the overall design, pieces, and floor plan. There’s enough decisions to be made with a baby on the way. It never hurts to have a little help deciding on a paint colors and narrowing down the overwhelming world of light fixtures and cribs and changing tables!

I couldn’t wait to get to work on this design board, and oh my heart, I love it! And best of all, they do too! The walls are currently a light gray and the wood floors in the nursery are painted white and loaded with charm. But after spending time talking with the soon-to-be-parents about their dreams for the nursery, it was clear a palette of pretty grays and whites wasn’t going to cut it. It was time to round up some rustic charm and at Dad’s request – dinosaurs. No fooling, I was initially stumped on how to overlap his love for dinosaurs with her refined style. But what a fun challenge! The homeowners loved these prints from Restoration Hardware and though they weren’t in the budget, I used them as a jumping off point for the design.
I create Design Boards so that clients have a variety of options for all the major pieces when pulling together the space. They are an interactive design resource with tips and links to all the elements included in the design, including tutorials for DIY projects the homeowners can tackle on their own! I was inspired by this simple mobile designed by Ceci Bean. I found some similar-sized wood dinosaur cut outs on Etsy, and wa-lah, this nursery had its first dose of “sophisticated + dinosaur style.” The rustic shelves are another great DIY project. And this baby boy has handy Grandpas who I know will be smitten by the opportunity to put their stamp on the nursery.
Out of respect for my clients and their design investment (as well as their desire for a personalized space), I don’t usually share the full list of resources for client projects. But we were all so smitten by this space. And they were kindly totally up for sharing it with you all!
